A Step Towards Ending Period Poverty

Period Poverty in Zambia

In Zambia, thousands of girls miss school because they lack access to menstrual products, education, and period-friendly facilities. This affects their learning, confidence, and future opportunities.

In rural areas, many girls use torn cloth (chitenge), leaves, scrap paper, or even reuse disposable pads during their periods, increasing the risk of infection and discomfort. As a result, some girls miss up to a week of school each month, harming their academic progress, self-esteem, and sense of belonging.

Who we are

Baobuyu Learning Center is a nonprofit organization based in Livingstone, Zamiba. Our work includes a preschool, a community center, a Women's Sewing Circle, and our newest initiative, The Pad Ladies, a reusable pad project, with our ladies Debra, Yvonne and Christine.

With such a great need for menstrual products, especially in rural communities, we want to do our part to help keep girls in school.

By making and providing reusable pads, we can help girls manage their periods with confidence and stay focused on their education.

This is just the beginning and we are so excited to keep building a better future together!

Our Reusable Pads

Our reusable pads are handmade using brightly coloured 100% cotton fabrics, making them not only practical and comfortable, but beautiful too!

We have three sizes for three levels of protection.

• Pantiliner - Perfect for light flow days, spotting and the beginning or end of your period.
• Regular Pad - Two layers of absorbent plush towel between a breathable 100% cotton top and polar fleece backing to help prevent leaks.
• Nightrider - Our extra-long, extra-thick pad for nights, giving you added coverage and absorbency so you can sleep with confidence. worrying less about leaks.
